What happens if the test results indicate that I may have chronic kidney disease (CKD)?

Your doctor will want to confirm your diagnosis and check your kidney function to help plan the treatment:

  • He will calculate what stage of kidney failure you are suffering from by looking at your blood creatinine, age and other factors.
  • He will have an internal image of your kidneys and the entire urinary system from an ultrasound. This tells your doctor about the size of your kidneys, whether you have a problem such as stones or tumors, and if there are problems with the structure of your kidney.
  • In some cases, a kidney biopsy is done to exclude a specific type of kidney disease.
